Peptide active

Acetyl Hexapeptide-37

Acetyl Hexapeptide-37 increases the skin’s moisture content by promoting increased formation of the membrane protein aquaporin-3 (AQP3). Because this protein forms “water channels” in cell membranes, a higher concentration of aquaporin-3 in the skin improves the flow of water from the basal layer of the epidermis into the stratum corneum. Acetyl Hexapeptide-37 also increases collagen I synthesis and keratinocyte proliferation in the skin.

The effectiveness of this peptide active has already been demonstrated impressively in a number of studies. In one, the moisture content of the skin was increased by 131 % after 56 days of treatment with Acetyl Hexapeptide-37. Study design: 20 women aged between 30 and 50; 2 % Acetyl Hexapeptide-37 formulation; applied twice daily.

Allantoin

Allantoin promotes epithelial formation and cell proliferation. It has antioxidant, moisturising and smoothing properties. It occurs naturally in maple, horse chestnut and wheatgerm, among others.

Almond oil

Even Cleopatra valued the effect of almond oil, which is obtained from sweet almond kernels. It absorbs quickly after application and leaves virtually no sheen. Almond oil improves the skin’s lipid mantle and protective layer.

Apricot kernel oil

Apricot kernel oil absorbs quickly after application and leaves virtually no sheen. It improves the skin’s lipid mantle and protective layer.

Argan oil

Argan oil is obtained from the seed kernels of the ripe fruit of the argan tree (Argania spinosa). At 80 %, the oil has a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids. Its moisturising and anti-inflammatory action helps to soothe dry skin and skin prone to irritation.

Bisabolol

Bisabolol is the principal anti-inflammatory active in chamomile oil. It also has a wound-healing effect.

Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane

Water-resistant UV-A filter.

4-Butylresorcinol

Unlike most Europeans, consumers in China and Japan in particular seek lighter skin, which has led to intensive research into skin-lightening agents. The most impressive result of these scientific efforts to date has been the development of 4-butylresorcinol. It inhibits melanin synthesis very efficiently and so lightens the skin. As the active has no effect on melanin that has already formed, the product must be applied daily for at least three to four weeks to achieve the desired effect.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like compound produced by the body that stimulates energy production in skin cells. In this way it supports skin regeneration. The body’s own Q10 production declines markedly from the age of 20, however. Supplying coenzyme Q10 via the skin can counteract this and reduce skin ageing over the long term.

Cyclopeptide-5

Cyclopeptide-5 is a ring-shaped peptide active that binds to integrins on skin cells and so improves “communication” between them. This stimulates regenerative processes while inhibiting breakdown processes in the skin. Over the long term, skin ageing can be slowed in this way.

Ectoin

As ectoin can reduce skin irritation, it is used above all for sensitive skin.

Evening primrose oil

Evening primrose oil is rich in omega-6 fatty acids. It helps prevent moisture loss from the skin and increases its elasticity.

Ferulic acid

Ferulic acid occurs in higher concentrations above all in green beans, dill, cabbage and rice. This natural polyphenol is distinguished by a particularly strong antioxidant effect that clearly exceeds that of resveratrol, and thereby helps prevent premature skin ageing.

Glycerin

Glycerin increases the moisture content of the skin because it penetrates the skin and markedly improves its water-binding capacity.

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is a liquid wax and therefore very similar to human sebum. Unlike fatty oils it cannot be broken down by the skin’s own lipases. It distributes itself within the stratum corneum, remains there comparatively longer and increases its elasticity. The skin’s lipid mantle is thereby improved without acting occlusively.

Lactic acid/glycerin

The combination of lactic acid and glycerin increases the moisture content of the skin, as both penetrate the skin and markedly increase its water-binding capacity.

Magnolia extract

The two principal actives in magnolia extract show a pronounced antimicrobial effect (Park et al., In vitro antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects of honokiol and magnolol against Propionibacterium sp. Eur J Pharmacol. 2004 Aug 2;496(1–3):189–195). Blackheads and acne can be markedly reduced by magnolia extract.

Mannitol/glycerin

The combination of mannitol and glycerin increases the moisture content of the skin, as both penetrate the skin and markedly increase its water-binding capacity. The complexion looks plumper.

Niacinamide

Niacinamidee reduces pigmentation spots on mature skin.

UV filter

Water-resistant UV-B filter.

Palmitoyl Oligopeptide

Palmitoyl Oligopeptidee contains a fragment of type I collagen in its structure. Its effect is based on increased collagen synthesis, which is likely to rest on a feedback mechanism.

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 inhibits the formation of interleukin 6 (IL-6), which is partly responsible for inflammatory processes in the skin. Lowering the IL-6 concentration inhibits inflammation-driven breakdown of the cell matrix, thereby slowing skin ageing.

Panthenol

As provitamin B5, D-panthenol belongs to the vitamin B complex. It increases the skin’s capacity to retain moisture and promotes the formation of new cells. It is therefore also used pharmaceutically as an active in many healing ointments.

UV filter

Polysilicone-15

Water-resistant UV-B filter with a UV-A filtering component that is not absorbed through the skin.

Shea butter

Shea butter contains a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids and phytosterols. These are incorporated into the lipid layers of the skin in greater quantity and so have a barrier-strengthening effect. Shea butter improves the skin’s lipid mantle and protective layer.

Sodium ascorbyl phosphate/tocopherol complex

Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is a highly effective and particularly stable form of vitamin C. It supports the skin’s own mechanisms for producing the “building blocks” collagen, elastin and laminin. Tocopheryl acetate is a form of vitamin E with a pronounced radical-scavenging effect. Because the two compounds have different redox potentials, this complex offers outstanding antioxidant properties for the skin, neutralising harmful free radicals extremely efficiently.

Squalane

Squalanee is a triterpene found in many plant oils that has skin-softening and smoothing properties.

Tetrapeptide-21

Tetrapeptide-21 is a peptide active that leads to increased collagen synthesis in the skin. Because of its comparatively small size it can penetrate into deeper layers of the skin. The increased collagen content reduces wrinkles and makes the skin appear markedly firmer and more vital (Farwick et al., 2011, Experimental Dermatology, 20, 600–613).

Peptide active

Tetrapeptide-30

Tetrapeptide-30 is a peptide active. It can reduce the UV-induced formation of the signalling substances responsible for increased pigmentation of the skin. The effectiveness of this new active has been demonstrated in a number of in vivo studies.

Tocopheryl acetate

Tocopheryl acetate is a radical scavenger that can slow degenerative processes in the skin. It increases the moisture-retaining capacity of the stratum corneum and helps prevent premature skin ageing caused by UV-A radiation.

Urea

Urea occurs naturally in the skin at a concentration of 8–11 µg per square centimetre. Where the urea concentration falls below this value, the skin is usually dry. Applying urea externally at concentrations of between 1 and 3 % can raise the skin’s urea concentration again. Thanks to its water-binding properties, urea therefore has a moisturising effect. As urea acts keratoplastically at a concentration of 3 to 5 % and keratolytically above that, using higher concentrations does not appear useful.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is important for the growth, function and structure of the skin. It supports the formation of corneocytes and the production of collagen. A reinforced collagen scaffold keeps the skin firm and supple. The regeneration of skin cells is improved, which prevents wrinkles over the long term.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a component of all human cell membranes, but is produced only by photosynthetically active organisms such as plants and cyanobacteria. One of its most important functions is that of a lipid-soluble antioxidant: it protects polyunsaturated fatty acids in membrane lipids, lipoproteins and depot fat from destruction by oxidation. Tocopheryl acetate is a form of vitamin E with a pronounced radical-scavenging effect.
